What is a Dental Assistant?

One of the most compelling aspects of pursuing a dental assistant program is the sheer breadth and practicality of the skills you acquire. These aren’t abstract academic concepts — they’re real-world competencies that you’ll use from your very first day on the job. And our program is designed to deliver those skills efficiently.

The scope of the role varies considerably depending on the state and the dental practice. In some offices, dental assistants focus exclusively on chairside clinical support — passing instruments, suctioning, taking impressions, and assisting with procedures like fillings, crowns, extractions, and even oral surgeries. In others, they wear multiple hats, moving fluidly between the clinical operatory and the front desk, handling scheduling, billing, insurance claims, and patient communication. This versatility is one of the things that makes the role so engaging — no two days are exactly the same.

Dental Assistants perform many tasks, including, but not limited to the following*:

Learning these skills translate into real confidence. By the time students complete the hands-on clinical hours they already feel genuinely prepared to step into a professional dental office and contribute meaningfully from day one.

(*Dental Assisting rules and regulations vary by state) Dental Assistants can work in a private dental office, public health clinic, or military clinic. There are also opportunities for Dental Assistants to work in sales, equipment repair or education!
